Lori Ann Villanueva Talen, the mastermind, would produce fraudulent coupons with discounts “near or even over” the retail value of an item.
She used to sell those fake coupons to the subscribers she found on social media and used to text them using the encrypted messaging app.
She was paid more than $400,000 in bitcoin and occasionally “exchanged coupons for stolen rolls of the special paper stores use to print out coupons,” according to the report.
She is currently serving 12 years of a prison sentence.
